This game world is based on the world invented and described by J.R.R. Tolkien in The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and other works. It is set in western Middle-earth, the land where mortals and many elves dwelt for ages and takes place at the end of the Third Age, sometime between when Bilbo arrived in Rivendell and before Frodo needed to leave the Shire. (We chose not to set a specific date, as none of the activity in the server is directly linked to events in the books and we want to maintain a degree of flexibility.)
The Player's Manual is designed to provide you with important information about the settings the module uses and also to help those of you looking to create a character representative of Middle Earth. Middle Earth is a very different world from the Forgotten Realms – its people; places and history are distinct in many respects, enabling you to participate in and enjoy a world that uses Neverwinter Nights mechanics but attempts to be true to a different setting.
We appreciate that some may be daunted by reading long documents such as this, but it is our hope that in doing so, you will understand and appreciate the lengths we have gone to in making Untold Tales a truly unique Middle-earth experience. There is much to know to play effectively in our world. Some of it is vital for you to know as you begin. Some of it you do not need to know in detail right away, though it is important. Some is material that may be of interest only.
